Pat Egan and Alex Caton met in 1998 while both living in Asheville, NC. They quickly formed a close friendship and musical partnership that combined their mutual love and respect for traditional music of Ireland and the Appalachian Mountains. Like earlier immigrants from Ireland and Great Britain, these ex-pats from across the pond choose to settle in musically rich areas along the Appalachian Mountains. They brought aspects of their own cultural and musical heritage with them but kept a keen ear and open mind to learning new styles. Egan and Caton have just released their first CD together – Fiddle Tunes and Ballads; a lovely collection of their great talents and a fine representation of their love and respect for these great musical traditions.
Originally from the County Tipperary, Pat spent his youth learning from the masters in his own backyard. His early interest in singing and guitar accompaniment in his home parish led him to meet the great uilleann piper Michael Cooney, with whom, along with the great master accordion player, Paddy O’Brien, he would later go on to form the Internationally-renowned band Chulrua. Pat began playing professionally when he moved to Westport, County Mayo in the 1980’s and quickly became established in the vibrant music scene. He spent the next two decades splitting his time between the States and Ireland, performing across the globe, teaching his trade and recording to International acclaim.
Born in Watford, England, Alex grew up moving between England, Scotland and America. It was music that was always a constant in her life. She first put bow to hand at age five and continued her studies in violin through her college years. Since then she has dedicated her life to passing on the tradition of old time and Irish music and has been teaching privately for over 13 years now. Alex founded and is director of Mountain Road Fiddle Camp in Mingo, WV. She has also been involved with the Blue Ridge Irish Music School in Charlottesville, VA as a fiddle and vocal teacher for close to a decade. In 2009, at only 34 years of age, Alex was nominated for a Virginia Heritage Award for her dedication to the preservation and continuation of traditional forms of music.
