During the 70’s, his fiddling friends, Mike Cross and Clay Buckner, introduced him to Irish music. Since then, Fred has studied and played with just about any Irish fiddler that you can think of. He also hosts workshops at his North Carolina home featuring some of the very best traditional Irish fiddlers in the world – James Kelly, Tommy Peoples, Kevin Burke, and the late Andy McGann, to name just a few.
Belfast writer and poet Ciaran Carson mentions Fred in his book about traditional Irish music, Last Nights Fun:
“The fiddle-player has been introduced to me as Fred Lail and he has a Carolinian accent you could cut with a Bowie knife, but he is playing this graceful bouncy Irish music and I'm trying to put my finger on it -- the set of tunes, the way he bows them and the way he holds himself…”
Fred is currently composing, teaching, and performing with a variety of musicians
when he is not managing the Artley violin shop - his day job.
Fred likes to have fun with the music and hopes to pass that feeling along
to his audience. He says about his fiddling: I really believe that my heart
is in the right place- I just hope that my fingers are too!
